AS EXPECTED AND previously reported on BF.C, five holdovers have now joined the OSU program. By enrolling in January, they'll get the added benefit of spring ball plus a big head start in advance of fall camp. A pair of walk-ons, plus a former UCLA verbal commit who switched to Oregon State in November, are now also officially in the OSU fold.

Oregon State confirmed on Monday that Trevor Romaine, Will Storey, Fred Thompson, Terron Ward and D.J. Welch have officially joined the program for the first day of winter term classes. In addition, true-freshmen Darryl Jackson, Troy Whalen and David Vieru have also been added to the roster, Whalen and Vieru are walk-ons.

Thompson is one Beaver fans have been waiting to see since he pledged OSU -- the Beavers won a Pac-10 recruiting battle for the defensive tackle over Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, Washington and Washington State in the 2010 class for Thompson. D-tackle is also a position of considerable need for Oregon State with starters Stephen Paea and Brennan Olander graduating.

Thompson was a first-team all-city defensive tackle at Oakland Tech in Oakland, Calif., the same high school as OSU 2010 class member Ryan Murphy, who is a potential star in the making at safety. Murphy redshirted this past season at Oregon State.

Romaine was a two-time All-CIF Inland Division kicker for Centennial High in Corona, Calif. Storey was a first-team linebacker in 2009 for Lake Oswego High. Ward, a running back, was the Bay Area News Group East Bay Player of the Year at storied De La Salle High in Concord, Calif. Welch was the co-Desert Valley League MVP as a linebacker for Palm Desert High in Palm Desert, Calif.

Jackson's college journey has been eventful. He originally signed his LOI with Southern Methodist University but did not enroll. He was then a longtime verbal commit to UCLA before pledging Oregon State about seven weeks ago. He retains his full college eligibility, with five to play four -- having attended El Camino College last term, but not as a full-time student. He graduated from Mayfair High in Lakewood, Calif.

Linebacker Josh Williams was not mentioned in the official release from Oregon State, likely indicating OSU remains hopeful for him to qualify in time for the spring and/or in advance of fall camp. The same holds true for Mau Nomani, who was reported to have been walking on following his mission, but he also was not mentioned in the school's official release.

IN THE WALK-ON department, Whalen is a 6-2, 230-pound long snapper from De La Salle High --he was a prep teammate of Ward’s. Vieru is a 6-3, 271-pound offensive guard from Centennial High in Gresham. In 2009, he was named honorable mention all-state on offense, second team all-state on defense. He also was the 2010 state heavyweight wrestling champion.

The group joins incoming junior college transfers Rusty Fernando (DE) and Blake Harrah (OL), who signed mid-year letter of intent transfer documents and enrolled at OSU.

Harrah has been listed as one of a multitude of defensive ends in the 2011 class at Oregon State, both on Scout.com and also in the OSU release of Dec. 15 announcing his signing. But Monday's release lists Harrah as an o-lineman, so the 6-3, 255-pound Harrah will apparently get his first look in spring ball up front on the offensive line.
