SCRIMMAGE: Beav offense shows off new moves

CORVALLIS -- You couldn’t have asked for worse “spring” weather in April for a Friday scrimmage. Day nine of spring football for Oregon State was a day of situational scrimmaging -- full of holds, some decent runs, and more players landing on the injured list.

Due to a volleyball tournament in the Truax indoor center, the team was forced outside to Reser Stadium in inclement weather.

The players held up well in the 55-degree weather and constant drizzle, and it didn’t stop the players from executing plays and getting through a long day of practice to wrap up the week.

The referees showed up today to officiate and put a big emphasis on holding calls.

This was a big focus for Mike Riley today; he said he wanted the guys to get used to getting those calls again. Well, they did.

There were seven holds called throughout practice, four of which were in the red zone.

That’s not something Riley should be pleased with, but a good learning tool at the same time.

There were a lot of third down conversions again as well today, which has been a big focus all throughout spring practice given last year’s poor execution of third downs that arguably, cost OSU a few games.

The defense still looks stronger than the offense at the end of Week 3, but the offense was making big moves and things today started to look more even.

QB Cody Vaz completed nine of 21 passes for 68 yards and just one interception.

Vaz handed off the ball to the leading rusher on the day, RB Ryan McCants, who ran it for 16 yards — the longest run of the day.

Vaz threw a bomb to TE Colby Prince for 48 yards, but Prince failed to get it into the end zone.

And, as Riley said there would be, there was a read-option play run by Vaz, who was still surprised about it in a post-practice interview.

QB Sean Mannion had a better day passing than Vaz and was seven of 19 attempts for 106 yards.

WR Obum Gwatcham, one to watch, had five catches for 69 yards and is a tough match-up for the CB’s given that he’s 6-foot-5.

Riley said Friday that QB Ryan Katz will not take any live snaps during spring ball. The starting QB did take snaps during some seven-on-seven drills, and will continue to do so for the next couple of weeks.

The injured list expanded today with WR Darrell Catchings out with a sore neck, slotback Geno Munoz (hamstring), and RB Terron Ward, who took a helmet to the knee in practice earlier this week.

With more players hurt, it gave the ambulatory running backs and receivers more reps. McCants had seven carries for 48 yards, while RB Jovan Stevenson was 10 carries for 46 yards.

WR Kevin Cummings also has not practiced since suffering a concussion in last Friday’s practice from a monster hit by LB Cameron Collins.

Collins and OL Josh Andrews got into a bit of a scuffle early in the 50-play scrimmage, but it was quickly broken up and plays resumed. Riley wasn’t 100 percent sure what it was about. However, it was good to see the offensive line fired up again.

Depth-wise, there was a lot of rotation today, but that's common in the spring. Everyone is getting in a lot of experience, playing hard through each play.

Riley was pleased with practice and feels the Beavs are learning more every day. But he was worried about the depth available on Friday with the growing injured list. On the upside, the injuries to Munoz, Ward, Cummings and Catchings aren’t anything too serious.
