THUD! Beavs flattened in loss to Sac State

OREGON STATE WAS a 27 1/2 point favorite against Sacramento State -- and they played as if they could simply show up and walk away with a win. Instead, Sacramento State led much of the game, gained confidence as the game wore on and went for two in a gutsy call that hung a devastating loss on Oregon State.
There's going to be some soul searching in Corvallis tonight and tomorrow.
And beyond.
Sacramento State's Jeff Fleming hit Brandyn Reed with a touchdown pass in overtime to pull even with
Oregon State
and found him again in the end zone when the Hornets went for the two-point conversion for a devastating 29-28 upset win over the Beavers on Saturday.
The Beavs played uninspired football for most of three quarters.
It was so bad that
Malcolm Agnew
hit the 100-yard mark by the end of the third quarter and yet OSU had yet to score a touchdown, trailing 21-6 at that stage.
Agnew rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns.
But it sure didn't look like it on the scoreboard.
And OSU could not stop Sacramento State's one dimensional attack, as Sac State owned the Beaver defense through the air and converted key third downs along the way -- Fleming completed 22 of 35 passes for 257 yards and three scores.
OSU, with
Sean Mannion
having replaced
Ryan Katz
after the first half, came back to tie the score at 21-all. The move was an apparent coach's decision, and Katz was not injured according to the webcast.
The Beavs then had a chance to win it with a chip shot field goal but a 5-yard penalty moved it back and the ensuing 27-yard attempt hit the upright.
With the game tied at 21, Agnew put the Beavers ahead in overtime with a 17-yard touchdown run. Fleming countered with a 4-yard scoring pass to Reed and then the conversion to win it.
