LONG INTO THE night, Oregon State and Stanford threw haymakers at one another. Long distance threes, some made by a guy wearing only one shoe. Stifling defense. Blocks, steals and comebacks galore. But in the end, after four gut wrenching overtimes, OSU fell to Stanford 103-101.

Midway through the first half, Roberto Nelson lost a shoe. And then he swished a three.

And then another.

Stanford quickly called a timeout.

It felt like the Beavs' night right then. They built a 15-point lead at the half. But then Stanford came back.

Oregon State pushed it to double digits again in the second half. But then Stanford came back. Again.

Every possession counted down the stretch. And then for four overtimes, down the stretch again and again in the longest game in Oregon State history.

It almost never was. OSU’s Eric Moreland grabbed a rebound and tried to outlet at the end of regulation but his elbow was nicked and the ball fell to Stanford’s Josh Owens, who hit a putback as time expired. But reply confirmed Owens had a fingernail on the ball as the backboard lit to orange and the bucket was waved off. So began the overtime odyssey.

Each team had chances to win in the first three overtimes. But a turnover there, a missed free throw here, and the roller coaster ride improbably, amazingly, continued. And then Stanford in the fourth overtime was suddenly up five.

OSU stormed back, cutting it to 100-99 on a pair of Jared Cunningham free throws. Stanford went up 102-99. Two of three from the line for Nelson made it 102-101. Stanford hit a free throw and the Beavs had one more chance.

But Nelson's trey was just off and then it was over, a 103-101 thriller that someone had to lose. Alas for Beaver fans, it was Oregon State.

The stats don't do this one justice but Nelson and Cunningham had 19 points apiece for Oregon State (11-5, 1-3). Moreland, who is fast becoming a defensive force in the Pac-12, had six blocks while the Beavs had 11 swats total. Joe Burton scored 18 points for the Beavs, with Devon Collier (16) Ahamd Starks (13) and Angus Brandt (10) also scoring in double figures.
