Recruits Take Field at PGE Park

This Saturday in downtown Portland ten soon to be Oregon State Beavers will be participating in Oregon's 4A High School All-Star game, the Les Schwab Bowl.

Out of the 10 Beaver students playing in Saturday's game, five have a scholarship to play football at Oregon State.

Quarterback Ryan Gunderson of Central Catholic, linebacker Andy Darkins of Lake Oswego, tight end Zach Hagemeister of Lebanon Union, Roy Schuening of Pendleton, and tight end Keith Robertson of Lake Oswego all signed letters of intent in February and will join to the Beaver football team this fall.

Out of the other five players, two plan to walk on, tight end/linebacker Doug Meeuwsen of Century and offensive guard Zac Babb of Canby. The other three players, running back/linebacker Jake Dorsey of Roseburg, defensive end Gabe Smith of Sheldon, and offensive tackle Ed Wagner plan on focusing their attenton on academics in Corvallis.

Babb, Gunderson, Meeuwsen, Robertson, and Wagner will play for the South in the white jerseys while Dorsey, Hagemesiter, Schuening, and Smith will suit up in blue for the North squad.

Linebacker Andy Darkins, Oregon's 4A Defensive Player of the Year, will be watching from the sidelines due to a shoulder and ankle injury. The athletic player will still enroll at OSU in the fall where he will hit the weight room and the rehab program.

The 56-year old event formerly known as the Oregon Bowl will feature the top-graduating seniors from around the state in a North versus South showdown. Quarterbacks Ryan Gunderson and Alex Brink, the 4A Offensive Player of the Year, will try and guide their respective teams to a victory Saturday evening.

Gunderson and Brink just two of 21 players in the 2003 Les Schwab Bowl to have singed letters of intent to division I football programs around the country.

Marty Johnson of Sheldon, who lead his team to the state championship last December, will guide the South team, while Steve Coury of Lake Oswego will direct the North squad. Coury was a star wide receiver at Oregon State from 1976-79, gaining All-Pac-10 honors in '79.
