A look at some of the news and notes from Scout's road trip to Colorado..…
Scout Out West: Valor Christian (Colo.)
Games Scouted: Highlands Ranch (Colo.) Valor Christian vs. Broomfield (Colo.) Legacy Scout Out West Luke Del Rio – 6-2/195 - WR – Highlands Ranch (Colo.) Valor Christian - 2013 Recruiting: Committed to Oklahoma State My Take: Del Rio is headed to Oklahoma State to play in the Cowboys high-powered offense, and he's got plenty of practice in VC's offense. It was a workmanlike night for Del Rio, who threw four touchdown passes in the first half, and was out with the other starters by halftime. Del Rio looks noticeably bigger since we saw him during the Elite 11, and he showed tremendous pocket presence, something we didn't get to see on the camp tour, as well as the ability to make all the throws. He was especially adept in the short and intermediate routes, putting good spin on his throws and threading the needle. Christian McCaffrey– 6-0/190 – RB – Highlands Ranch (Colo.) Valor Christian - 2014 Recruiting: Double-digit offers, including Stanford, Boise State, Colorado and Duke My Take: McCaffrey is a Scout 300 back in the 2014 class, and the son of former NFL standout Ed McCaffrey has tremendous speed and runs really tough between the tackles while also getting out into space quickly. He's ridiculously quick out of the backfield and has another gear in the open field. McCaffrey did a good job of seeing the hole and hitting the hole, fending off tacklers and showing the burst in space. He's not just quick, he's fast too, and has really good vision. The Valor Christian offense also called for a lot of McCaffrey getting out and catching passes, and he was difficult to stay with on a couple of wheel routes. Alec Ruth – 6-6/295 – OT – Highlands Ranch (Colo.) Valor Christian - 2014 Recruiting: Interest from several Western schools My Take: Ruth plays left tackle for Valor Christian and is a big-bodied tackle, who might be better suited to play inside in college. He's more of a waist-bender than a knee bender, not showing a good amount of flexibility and was adequate in pass protection. He was, though, markedly better in the running game, doing a good job of getting to the second level to take on defenders and doing a good job of drive-blocking. Isaiah Holland– 6-5/290 – OT – Highlands Ranch (Colo.) Valor Christian - 2014 Recruiting: Interest from several Western schools My Take: Holland plays on the right side, and plays like a more natural tackle, with better flexibility and very good feet, which he keeps chopping the entirety of a block. He plays with a lot more brute strength and nasty and is very good in pass protection. Like Ruth, Holland has a good change of direction which enables him to get to the second level and attack linebackers as equally effective as he handles defensive linemen. He gets to his man quickly then takes short choppy strides to keep a good base and drive his man. Eric Lee – 5-10/180 – CB – Highlands Ranch (Colo.) Valor Christian - 2015 Recruiting: Interest from several Western schools My Take: Lee is one of the better underclass defensive backs we've seen this spring, which is saying a lot because of the good number of underclass defensive backs in the region. Just a sophomore, Lee already has a good frame which can probably get another 15-20 pounds on it, and he'll probably grow another couple of inches. His backpedal is smooth, the hips quickly turn and he does an excellent job of finding the ball and staying with his man. He had an interception, and just missed two more, while also having another pass breakup. His ball skills are tremendous and he'll also knock a receivers head off if given the chance. He'll be one of the top DBs in the region in the 2015 class. Brandon is in his eighth year with Scout.com, currently as a National Recruiting Analyst and West Regional Manager. Prior to joining the Scout.com Recruiting Team, he was a team recruiting writer. He's been covering recruiting for the Scout.com network since 2003. Twitter | Blog | Facebook | E-Mail |
