Prospect Preview: Week Thirteen

Thomas Duarte

Semifinal and final action takes place throughout the West this weekend and UCLA commits and recruits are active in a number of those games...

Game of the Week: Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei at Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure
Two of the traditional Southland powers meet in a CIF-SS Pac-5 semifinal matchup. Mater Dei is headed by four-star tight end Thomas Duarte, the #2-ranked tight end in the West, as well as 2014 cornerback Jonathan Lockett, a Scout 300 prospect for his class. The Seraphs boast Arizona verbal Zachary Green at running back, who's been stellar this season, and two of the top underclassmen in the West, 2015 quarterback Ricky Town, who has offers from Miami and UCLA, and Scout 300 2014 tight end Bryce Dixon, who is nearing double-digit offers.

Phoenix (Ariz.) Mountain Pointe vs. Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton
Mountain Pointe beat Hamilton in week one and the Huskies will be out to avenge the loss. If you love good battles in the trenches, this is a must see. Mt. Pointe features two-way starters Kenny Lacy (UCLA commit) and junior Natrell Curtis. Hamilton's junior DE Qualen Cunningham is a special player that already holds multiple BCS offers. Hamilton's offensive line features USC commit Casey Tucker and Army commit Patrick Joseph.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Crenshaw vs. Los Angeles (Calif.) Venice
Crenshaw is trying to keep their outside chances at the state bowl game alive.  Led by UCLA commit Mossi Johnson and Utah verbal Dominique Hatfield (who UCLA has offered), the Cougars face a Venice squad that has been competitive all year.

Long Beach (Calif.) Poly vs. Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco
A berth in the CIF-SS Pac-5 finals are on the line, and the Jackrabbits feature a UCLA commit in Jayon Brown, and a 2015 prospect with a UCLA offer, cornerback Iman Marshall. Bosco boasts a pair of 2014 prospects that UCLA likes a lot, Malik Dorton, a defensive end who was offered by the Bruins this week, and defensive back Jalel Wadood, who starred at their camp this summer.

Corona Centennial (Calif.) vs. Upland (Calif.)
Corona Centennial will take on a talented Highlander squad, featuring UCLA target Joe Mathis on the defensive line, and 2014 receiver Jeffrey Farrar, who wants to commit to UCLA.  The Huskies feature UCLA 2014 target Viane Talamaivo, who the Bruins have offered, and four-star offensive lineman Cameron Hunt, a commit to Cal.

Bellevue (Wash.) vs. Snoqualmie (Wash.) Mount Si
Bellevue is the prohibitive favorite to win the 3A state title, which would be its fifth in a row. The Wolverines are ranked fifth in the country by FoxSportsNext.com, and have really not been tested by anyone in state. And they're in their home away from home, the Tacoma Dome. Mount Si was chugging along earlier this year, unbeaten, before they met Bellevue in a league game, and promptly got walloped. Now they take on a Wolverine team that's even more motivated to win another title. Junior quarterback Nick Mitchell will lead Mount Si, who also has Washington commit Cameron Van Winkle as their punter and kicker. And they'll have to play the game of their lives against a loaded Wolverines team, led by UCLA commit Myles Jack, the top outside linebacker in the region, 2014 two-way athlete Budda Baker, a top 10 player at his position in his class, and Sean Constantine, a linebacker who's headed to Washington.

Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial vs. Oro Valley (Ariz.) Ironwood Ridge.
Centennial is looking for revenge against the only team to beat them this year. UCLA commit RB Jalen Ortiz is having a monster year on both sides of the ball. Ironwood Ridge revolves around three-star CB Tyler Williams. Williams plays quarterback and is a difference maker. He holds offers from Colorado, San Diego State and Army as a defensive back.  The Coyotes are strong up front and have an offensive line with four D1 prospects. Seniors Hayden Johnson and Spencer Nathe each have Air Force offers and juniors Layth Friekh and Kamryn Bennett will be FBS players. Friekh already has offers from Oregon State, Utah, Washington and Arizona.

Los Angeles (Calif.) Salesian vs. San Luis Obispo (Calif.) Mission Prep
UCLA commit Jermaine Kelly and targets in 2014 Marquis Ware, Jamardre Cobb and Rodney Carr, lead a loaded Salesian team that is looking for a spot in the CIF-SS Northeast Division finals.

Fresno (Calif.) Central vs. Bakersfield (Calif.) Liberty
The Tigers are hoping to continue their playoff run against Bakersfield Liberty.  Fresno Central is led by UCLA cornerback prospect Johnny Johnson and the West's top prospect in 2014, receiver Michiah Quick, who UCLA has also offered.  Liberty's top prospects is one-time UCLA commit Cole Mazza, a longsnapper who flipped to Alabama.

Other UCLA Commits and Prospects in Action
Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde and UCLA verbal Poasi Moala take on Menifee (Calif.) Paloma Valley in CIF-SS Central Division semifinal playoff action.  Rialto (Calif.) Carter and UCLA verbal Kenneth Clark face Phelan (Calif.) Serrano in the semifinals of the CIF-SS Eastern Division playoffs. West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade and UCLA recruit, running back Terrell Newby will take on Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral in CIF-SS Western Division semifinal action.  Missouri City (Texas) Marshall and linebacker Deon Hollins meet Texas City in the Texas State playoffs.

Completed Seasons
Redlands (Calif.) running back Craig Lee, Encinitas (Calif.) La Costa Canyon offensive lineman Scott Quessenberry, Memphis (Tenn.) East offensive tackle Christian Morris, Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian linebacker Cameron Judge, St Petersburg (Fla.) punter Sean Covington, Orange (Calif.)
