Mavs' O.J. Isn't Beating The 'Whales'
So, O.J. Mayo, what did you do during your All-Star Break?
"I watched some whales,'' Mayo tells DB.com. (You can hear our full three-minute visit here.) "I did a little whale watching in Cabo. ... Just watched em. It was nice, a great experience. You may see turtles or jellyfish, everywhere you look, jumping around. It was a great experience. Some big animals.''
In Sunday's Dallas Mavericks loss to the Lakers, Mayo finished with eight points, 2-of-9 field goals, three rebounds, two assists, two steals and three turnovers.
Needless to say, finding a win becomes exponentially more difficult when Mayo totals more turnovers than made field goals.
In three games against the Lakers this season, Mayo is now averaging 11 points, 29.7 field-goal percentage, 25.0 3-point percentage, and 2.3 turnovers.
The Mavs are 1-2 in those games.
This season, in games where Mayo has converted at or under 40 percent of his field-goal attempts, the Mavs are 5-18.
Now, the Lakers haven't proven to be among the elite of the West (record-wise), his play in that high-profile game brings attention to a worrisome trend: Mayo's struggles against very good teams.
*Three games against San Antonio: 9.7 points, 37.8 FG%, 0-of-10 3-pointers, 4.5 assists, 3.3 turnovers
*Three games against Oklahoma City: 10.0 points, 33.3 FG%, 16.7 3PT%, 6.0 assists, 4.7 turnovers
*Two games against the Clippers: 14.0 points, 37.0 FG%, 10.0 3PT%, 5.0 assists, 2.5 turnovers
*Two games against Memphis: 10.5 points, 38.8 FG%, 50.0 3PT%, 4.0 assists, 3.0 turnovers
Against the best in the Western Conference, Mayo -- struggling to be a 11-points-a-game guy -- needs to improve. Other than his 3-point percentage against Memphis, those are some ugly numbers.
In other words, now that he's done watching the whales, he needs to start playing well against some of them.
