When head coach Mike Riley leads his squad onto the practice field less than two weeks from today, it will have been 218 days since the Beavers last played at the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.
Riley and his staff will have 27 days and 28 practices to find reinforcements after the graduations of stars Jordan Poyer at cornerback, Markus Wheaton at split end, Feti ‘Unga at middle linebacker and Colin Kelly at right tackle.
However, the 2013 roster includes 56 returning letterwinners that have combined to make 291 starts including 88 combined starts on the offensive line. Individually, the Beavers are led by senior left tackle Michael Philipp (35), senior cornerback Rashaad Reynolds (25), senior linebacker Michael Doctor (24) and junior defensive end Scott Crichton (24).
Beaver players are on most of the preseason watch lists including: Brandin Cooks – Maxwell Award (top player), Biletnikoff Award (top receiver); Scott Crichton - Bronko Nagurski Award (top defender), Bednarik Award (top defender), Lott Trophy (top defender); Keith Kostol – Ray Guy Award (top punter); Rashaad Reynolds – Jim Thorpe Award (top defensive back); Trevor Romaine – Groza Award (top kicker); Isaac Seumalo – Rimington Award (top center), Outland Award (top interior lineman); Storm Woods – Doak Walker Award (top running back).
