DAY 17: Quick practice for Riley's Beavs

CORVALLIS – What's this, a day off? Well, kinda. Mike Riley ended Friday's practice after only an hour after the team ran special teams simulations and field transitions. Chalk it up as a kind of mock walk-through, a week before the real one will take place. BF.C offers you a quick glance at OSU's low-key Day 17.

OSU's head man was very vocal on Friday for the brief period of time OSU spent in Reser Stadium working on various game simulations.

"A whole bunch of situations - transitional stuff," Mike Riley said of the day's events. BF.C asked Riley what it felt like to get back to some good old fashioned high-volume coaching.

"It brings it all a little more to life," Riley said. "You spend a lot of time just drilling plays. (It) brings it all forward – especially for the young guys."

Riley also offered a sneak peak at what the next week of practices will look like for OSU.

"We have a whole routine (for game prep week)," Riley said. "First-and-10 stuff on Monday, first-and-10 and third-down on Tuesday, third-down and red zone on Wednesday, and then everything put together on Thursday."

Practice Notes in Brief – Day 17
  • Cody Vaz and Sean Mannion barely threw the ball during Friday's abbreviated practice session. When they did, it was mostly for the benefit of the special teams unit, and for the defense when they were practicing the transitions between third down and fourth downs.

  • Senior tailback/cornerback/athlete Jovan Stevenson and freshman wideout Victor Bolden were the primary kick and punt returners on the afternoon but Bolden and Stevenson didn't do much energetic running downfield.

  • Safety Ryan Murphy was back in practice mode for Friday, and he was another member of the group that returned kicks.

  • Junior punter Keith Kostol and fellow junior kicker Trevor Romaine looked sharp on most of their kicks, some of which were made hastily under the pressure of an imaginary game clock countdown by various coaches.
