Beavs lose game, Brandt in Hawaii
Oregon State guard Roberto Nelson canned a rainbow three-pointer at the buzzer to pull the Beavers to 35-34 at the break.
But the game might have been decided in the opening seconds of the second half.
An Akron player collided knees with Angus Brandt, who looked to be in significant pain and had to be helped off the court. Brandt was coming back from the torn ACL last year.
After Brandt's injury, the Beavs were unable to generate a significant scoring run the rest of the way.
Oregon State entered the game ranked second (53.7 percent) in the nation in field goal percentage, but shot 43.5 percent for the game and saw their three-game win streak snapped.
Much of the game was spent at the free throw line, with the teams combining for 61 free throw attempts.
Oregon State was 25-32 from the line, while Akron was 21-29.
President Barack Obama and the First Family were in attendance at the game.
