MIKE CAVANAUGH TWEETED out Thursday evening that he's staying at Oregon State, bringing to an end a…
Garrett is Beavs' new OC, says source
Garrett, 48, was most recently the Tampa Bay receivers coach in 2013. He was part of Greg Schiano's staff that was let go after last season. The six years before that, he was in Dallas coaching tight ends under his brother, Cowboys head man Jason Garrett. He was also the passing game coordinator for the Cowboys for two seasons in 2011-12.
He is the son of longtime NFL assistant and former Columbia head coach Jim Garrett.
What's the Mike Riley connection? Well, he played for Riley way back in 1991, when Riley was coaching the San Antonio Riders in the World League.
Since 1992, Garrett has spent 16 years in the NFL and four seasons with Virginia, (seven with the Cincinnati Bengals, six with the Cowboys, two with the Arizona Cardinals and last season with the Bucs.)
It is unknown what his recruiting territory will be at Oregon State.
THE BEAVS MIGHT not be done when it comes to hires. Oklahoma State is pursuing Oregon State o-line coach Mike Cavanaugh for the same position in Stillwater.
Media sources have speculated salary might be a factor – Oklahoma State paid o-line coach Joe Wickline about twice as much as OSU paid Cavanaugh last season ($238,008). Cavanaugh was fourth on the OSU staff in salary behind assistants Mark Banker ($490,008), Bruce Read ($305,000) and departed offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf ($280,008), according to the Gazette-Times. Read coaches special teams. Wickline left Okie State to become the new offensive coordinator at Texas under Charlie Strong.
Another factor could be that after nine seasons at Oregon State, Cav didn't seem to be on Riley's radar in hiring a new offensive coordinator – as far as the media goes, anyway, he was never mentioned from what we saw in the various reports since Langsdorf departed for the Giants.
Oregon State also has a need for a tight ends coach.
They have in recent years had a graduate assistant in charge there. GA Kyle DeVan is leaving for a similar position with USC according to the LA Daily News after one season with the Beavs.
