Beavs drop opener, Wetzler suffers first loss

BEN WETZLER HAS been other-worldy this season but he looked far more human on Friday in a 4-1 loss to Washington State. Wetzler, who was looking to set the all-time program mark in wins, didn't get much help at the plate, with Oregon State managing only two hits through eight innings.

The fifth-ranked Oregon State baseball team were handcuffed by Washington State starter Joe Pistorese, managing four hits off the left-hander. Two, however, came with two down in the ninth on a single by Gabe Clark and double by Logan Ice.

Pistorese got Caleb Hamilton to ground out to end the game.

The Beavers (25-7 overall, 9-4 Pac-12 Conference) matched a Washington State first-inning run when Hamilton drove in Clark with a single in the second. Clark had singled with two down in the inning.

Clark finished with two hits, the only Beav to post more than one base-knock.

Washington State, however, sent eight to the plate in the third, scoring three runs – only one earned – and was aided by two Oregon State errors. Nick Tanielu recorded the Cougars' lone RBI in the inning with an infield single.

Pistorese went the distance for Washington State (16-14, 7-3), walking four in addition to his four hits allowed and striking out four. He picked up the win to improve to 3-1 on the year.

Tanielu and Trek Stemp had two hits to pace the Cougars.

Wetzler was going for his 31st victory in a Beaver uniform. He and Ken Noble (1975-78) are tied atop Oregon State's all-time win list.
