After slow start, Beavers win 28-16; now they hope Jackson's
knee is OK
The biggest concern about Oregon State's 28-16 victory over New Mexico State
Saturday at Reser Stadium wasn't the less-than-inspiring play of the Beavers.
It was over the health of The Franchise...Kerry

Beavers triumph
Coming off one of the worst games of his career, the last thing Derek Anderson
needed was a slow start Saturday against underdog New Mexico State.
He got one.
After the football slipped out of Anderson’s hand on the second offensive
play of the game and linebacker Greg Scaffidi returned the fumble 22-yards for
a touchdown, the junior quarterback must have wondered what else could go wrong...Gary

Bad start, star's bad knee dampen OSU's day
A fumble and a fake punt had the Beavers down on a warm and windy Saturday,
not out.
But when the franchise, megastar tailback Steven Jackson, hobbled off the Reser
Stadium turf, Oregon State seemed caught with an uppercut square on the chin...Bob

Forging ahead
Oregon State won a football game by defeating New Mexico State 28-16 on Saturday
before the now-customary sellout crowd at Reser Stadium.
A bigger victory, though, was the news that junior tailback Steven Jackson's
left knee wasn't thought to be seriously injured. The Beavers' offensive lynchpin,
who will undergo an MRI examination today, suffered a suspected sprained medial
collateral ligament when he was tackled late in the fourth quarter near the
OSU sideline...Brooks

Anderson shakes off boos
As Derek Anderson strode into a converted Valley Football Center meeting room
to meet the press, an Oregon State official smiled and thrust a final statistics
sheet into his midsection.
Anderson, wearing powder-blue basketball trunks and an orange baseball cap,
smiled back, shook his head and otherwise acted as if the papers were powdered
with anthrax...Jeff

Inspired Aggies make stand . . . only it's too brief
As you might expect, being 211/2-point underdogs to an Oregon State team that
looked horrible last week at Fresno State did not sit well with the New Mexico
State Aggies.
"I mean, c'mon," Aggies linebacker Jimmy Cottrell said. "It should
never be that much in Division I. . . . Definitely, we were insulted by that."...Paul

Anderson rallies Oregon State after a shaky start
If Oregon State's game against New Mexico State accomplished nothing else, it
coaxed Beavers fans from the ledge. Some might still be peering out the window,
wondering what harrowing incidents await their football team. But at least for
now they are back to being winners, and so are the Beavers.
Derek Anderson, who withstood more criticism this week than any other OSU quarterback
in recent history, finished strong to lead Oregon State to a 28-16 victory over
the Aggies on Saturday at Reser Stadium...Rachel
Bachman, Oregonian.
Oregon State sees improvement in win
It was better, Oregon State coach Mike Riley concluded. Not perfect -- but better.
As Riley awaited definitive word over the status of star tailback Steven Jackson,
he was encouraged by Oregon State's improvement -- albeit after a slow start
-- against New Mexico State Saturday...Anne
