As far as the spring game went, the white team won a defensively dominated
game 17-0 in front of 8,340 Beaver Believers. The Black squad, led by senior
quarterback Adam Rothenfluh, grabbed the pigskin first.
Dwight Wright started the afternoon game with a pair of short runs before Rothenfluh
hooked up with George Gillett for 25 yards and the games first, first down.
The White defense forced a fourth down and Wright fumbled on the play. The ball
was picked up by safety Eric Anderson who played for both teams today.
Derek Anderson led the White team to a field goal on their first drive of the
game. Anderson spread the ball around on the drive, connecting on 4-of-8 passes
to four different receivers.
On the day Anderson completed 8-of-21 passes for 86 yards. The White team’s
leading receiver was Mike Hass, who caught three passes for 88 yards and the
game’s only offensive touchdown. The touchdown reception, a 13-yard strike
from Ryan Gunderson, followed the biggest play of the day, a 65-yarder bomb
down the west sideline from Gunderson to Hass.
The other touchdown was by redshirt freshman linebacker, Derrick Doggett. D-Dogg,
as the team has dubbed him, picked off a Rothenfluh pass and raced 55-yards
down the east sideline into the end zone on the Valley Football Center side
of the field.
Bill Swancutt wreaked havoc much of the day in the Black team’s backfield
with three-and-a-half sacks and many other quarterback pressures.
"Bill changed the whole scrimmage, he's just a very difficult individual
to block," Riley said. "Bill plays hard every play whether it's in
practice or in a game."
Ryan Cole led all rushers in the game with 18 carries for 59 yards. Cole ran
the ball well inside for much of the day and had a few productive runs to the
outside as well.
Rothenfluh ended the day with seven completions on 13 attempts for 58 yards.
Gunderson played for both teams and completed six of 12 passes for 114 yards
and the games only offensive touchdown.
