Quarterback Kellen Clemens accounted for four touchdowns while the Ducks’
defense held OSU’s conference rushing leader Steven Jackson almost 60 yards
under his rushing average to key their 34-20 win over Oregon State. Oregon
maintained possession of the football for more than seven minutes longer than
Oregon State as the Ducks claimed the upper hand in the rushing duel, 218-24.

that would be the difference in the game. The Oregon defense held Ken Simonton
to 84 yards, ending Simonton's bid for four consecutive 1,000 yard seasons.
Oregon State had a chance to tie the game with a field goal late in the fourth
quarter after a Joey Harrington fumble, but Rashad Bauhman picked off a Jonathan Smith pass after James Newson slipped to seal the game. AP

One of the great games in the series, finally ended when
Ken Simonton dashed 16 yards for the winning touchdown in double overtime, as
the Beavers stunned the16th-ranked Ducks. The Beavers snapped a four-game losing
streak in the Civil War, and dumped Oregon from an apparent Sun Bowl down to
the Oahu Bowl. Simonton rushed for 157 yards and scored two of his four touchdowns
after regulation for Oregon State (5-6, 2-6 Pac-10), which notched its first
five-win season since 1971. AP

1997: Oregon 48, Oregon State 30
Pat Johnson scored four touchdowns and caught six passes
for 199 yards and Saladin McCullough rushed for 156 yards as the Ducks rolled
to a 21-3 first-quarter lead and were never threatened. The Ducks were just
5-5 entering the game and needed the triumph to qualify for a bowl game. They
parlayed that into an at-large invitation to the Las Vegas Bowl, where they
drilled Air Force to finish with a 7-5 record.
1996: Oregon 49, Oregon State 13
Saladin McCullough ran for 146 yards and three touchdowns and Tony Graziani
passed for three scores as Oregon continued its dominance in the series
1994: Oregon 17, Oregon State 13
In 1994, Oregon was amid one of the great Cinderella seasons ever -- bouncing
back from a 1-2 start and of course needed to beat Oregon State to get to the
Rose Bowl. They needed one more huge break and got one: A terrible spot when
OSU quarterback Don Shanklin's fourth-and-1 sneak in Oregon territory was ruled
short of a first down when the Beavers led, 13-10. From there, Danny O'Neal
drove the Ducks the length of the field and with three minutes to go hit Dino
Philyaw for the game-winning touchdown pass from 19 yards out.
More Civil War recaps:
- In 1962, both teams were powerful, with Oregon State following Heisman Trophy
winner Terry Baker to a 7-2 record and Oregon was led by Mel Renfro to a 6-2-1
mark (and its only losses were to Texas and Ohio State). Bob Berry hit Renfro
with a bomb for a touchdown that boosted Oregon to a 17-3 lead early, but
Baker brought the Beavers back, earning a trip to the Liberty Bowl in the
process.
- In 1964, it was "winner goes to Pasadena, loser stays home," even though
the teams didn't know it. Oregon prevailed, 7-6, by blocking an extra point.
But the Ducks had to wait an extra week to see what USC would do against Notre Dame before the Rose Bowl committee would vote on which of the co-champions
to invite. Yet, Oregon received the invitation, even though USC beat the Irish.
- The 1957 game was memorable for a couple of reasons, not the least of which
was that Oregon lost the game ... but still got to go to the Rose Bowl, because
the Beavers had been there the previous year and the conference had a "no-repeat"
rule at the time. But the game, the game: Oregon State won, 10-7, when Nub
Beamer recovered Oregon receiver Jim Shanley's fumble at the goal line, turning
the Ducks away. Thing is, Oregon coach Len Casanova points out that Shanley
crossed the plane of the goal line -- a touchdown today -- but lost
possession before the play was over. Fumble.
