Decision looming for Cali RB

AHMED MOKHTAR

A VERBAL looks to be coming sooner rather than later for Santa Ana, Calif., running back Ahmed Mokhtar. He'll visit one of his leaders next week when he arrives in Corvallis for the Beavers' Preview Day. A few days later, he'll travel to another Pac-10 school -- one who just offered. That one, he says, came as a complete surprise with the written offer his first contact with the school.

The Beavs, tied at the top for Mokhtar, will have an opportunity to get some face-to-face time with the resilient running back next week.

"I'm going to Oregon State for their Preview Day on the 28th," said Mokhtar. "I've been keeping in close touch with Mike Riley and Lee Hull."

In addition to Oregon State, Mokhtar has offers from Colorado State and another Northwest school just came on board as well. Other schools of interest include UCLA, Cal, Notre Dame, Penn State and USC.

"I hold the offers the highest right now," said Mokhtar. "My coach and I think it would probably be a good decision to make a verbal before my senior season so I can focus on having my best season during my senior year. I'm still thinking about that. My coach has been telling me Notre Dame is showing a lot of interest and also Penn State, too."

MOKHTAR'S FIRST GAME is September 8, and he hopes to try and take unofficial visits to Colorado State and Notre Dame before that.

Another visit is more concrete -- a trip to Washington in a little over two weeks.

HE RECEIVED A packet in the mail recently from Tyrone Willingham and the Huskies. Inside was a written offer.

"It was really random because before that, I don't think I received one letter from Washington," said Mokhtar. "It was really a surprise. I had sent out a tape to them, and during the spring a bunch of schools visited but they never came. So it was really unexpected."

Included in the mailing was a note from Willingham asking Mokhtar to call him as soon as he received it. Mokhtar said he had a good conversation with the Huskies' coach, and thanked him for the scholie offer.

"They have a 'Recruit Day' on August 5 so I'm going to go up there and check them out."

MOKHTAR PILED UP 1,498 yards on 254 carries with 15 TDs his junior year. He was selected All-Orange County first team, All-CIF Division I and co-Offensive Player of the Year in the rough and tumble Serra league.

Besides recruiting, Mokhtar said he's been trying to take a little bit of the summer to relax and hit the beach but the offseason is primarily about the upcoming year for he and his Mater Dei High teammates.

"We have practices and workouts every morning," said Mokhtar. "We ended spring football and then had about a week's vacation and then jumped right into our summer football program."
