Oregon State can't find end zone in ugly loss
It had been less than a year since an Oregon State football team had failed
to score a touchdown in a game.
But the Beavers won that one.
On this Saturday night in early October, they were not so lucky ... more

Ice-cold offense, turnovers cost OSU
There was no blowout loss. No halftime exit by fans looking
for another form of entertainment on a sun-baked afternoon under clear blue
skies.
But Oregon State received another dose of reality Saturday ... more

Split end Stroughter shines in loss
The numbers look impressive. Six receptions for 124 yards, and
four punt returns for 100 yards.
Oregon State split end Sammie Stroughter is the Beavers' potential game-breaker
on offense. But his performance wasn't enough Saturday to prevent a 13-6 loss
to Washington State ... more

Oregon State: No touchdowns, no victory
Oregon State’s defense answered the bell Saturday, but its offense wasn’t
up to the challenge.

Beavers lose sloppy game
This time, no one was accusing Oregon State of playing like it didn't care.

Riley, "and I could see it coming.
"Everybody knows we played hard and we competed. . . . I wish we could
have been rewarded but that's tough. That's life." ... more
from Paul Buker of The Oregonian.
Moore hears complaints, keeps mind in game
Oregon State quarterback Matt Moore came off the field with less than two minutes
remaining, turned to the student section and vented some of his frustration
on a heckler in the third row.

the green hat! Don't hide!" ... more

Can Riley still drive OSU though dark fall?
On a perfect football Saturday, the October sun cast a golden light over Reser
Stadium as Mike Riley's football team played for redemption.
It's ironic that such sparkling fall weather would envelop a day when the home
crowd of 42,951 was more in the mood to sing a dirge for the head coach ...

Offense stalls in loss to Cougars
Oregon State’s home Pacific-10 Conference losing streak stretched to four
games on Saturday when the offense flatlined in a 13-6 loss to Washington State.
The Beavers (2-3, 0-2) were restricted to 287 total yards, the second-fewest
in the 41-game Mike Riley II coaching era. That offensive ineptitude squandered
an outstanding effort from a defense that bounced back from a fiasco against
California with an inspired, emotional performance ... more

A punchless offense
So much for the preseason expectations of the offense carrying
the Oregon State football team until the young defense comes of age.

teams came through with better field position ... more

It's ugly, but Cougs win in Corvallis
Washington State and Oregon State, to borrow a phrase used in these parts once
before, set the game of football back about 100 years on Saturday. In one of
the ugliest – and largely boring – contests this side of the Willamette
Valley Paint Drying Festival, WSU prevailed 13-6.
This one was so ugly that the teams traded fumbles on three consecutive possessions
in the second quarter. It was so ugly that WSU’s leading rusher for much
of the game was punter Darryl Blunt ... more

Cougars stagger to unglamorous victory, ending a long
drought in Corvallis
Let's be clear about this: Ugly doesn't equal inconsequential. Unseemly doesn't
equate to insignificant.
Keep that in mind if you're struggling to come to grips with Washington State's
unsettling 13-6 victory here Saturday over Oregon State ... more

Coug defense saves day at Oregon State
On a day when the Washington State offense managed to score only one touchdown
and the miscues included a missed 25-yard field goal in the fourth quarter,
the Cougars kept Oregon State out of the end zone and beat the Beavers 13-6
Saturday in front of 42,951 in Reser Stadium.
Senior linebacker Scott Davis sacked Matt Moore twice on Oregon State's final
possession, the last one for a 10-yard loss with 1:49 to play that gave the
Cougars the ball at their own 33 ... more

Hill grabs WSU mark
Leaning against a wall adjoining the Washington State locker room here, Jason Hill could finally afford to exhale. It hadn't been his best day — after
all, he left with four minutes remaining in the third quarter because of a shoulder
bruise — but overall, life was good.
Hill ended an eventful week Saturday against Oregon State, catching five passes
for 121 yards and the game's only touchdown. In the process, he reached the
2,504-yard mark for career receiving, bettering Hugh Campbell's (1960-62) WSU
standard of 2,452 ... more
