The Beavers hit the gridiron for two Monday practices after an off day on Sunday. Mike Riley changed his mind on the matter of naming a starting quarterback. Day Six of the Stroughter watch held no knew revelations. Plus the latest injury news and more.

- Short recap -

Riley had thought Saturday’s scrimmage would help clear the path to naming a starter early this week between sophomores Sean Canfield and Lyle Moevao. Post-scrimmage, no decision appears likely to come soon and the battle appears closer than ever with neither seizing the advantage.

With both quarterbacks running hot and cold, Riley says he is considering the idea of a 2-quarterback system where both would play.

Day Six of the Sammie Stroughter watch passed with no news on that front. Stroughter is away from the team for personal reasons. Riley said he hasn’t heard from him and prudence demands the Beavs prepare for the season without him. Defensive tackle Gerard Lee (back) was back on Monday, while defensive end Dorian Smith (headaches) and outside linebacker Derrick Doggett (shoulder) continued to sit out of practice. Both, however, were expected back soon, said Riley.

It was trial by fire for junior corners Brandon Hughes and Keenan Lewis two years ago. But as painful an experience as that was, they say, it may end up being the best thing that could have happened and yield substantial benefits in '07 and beyond.

On deciding not to name the starting quarterback sometime early this week as he thought he might - “I thought it was getting closer, but I don’t know now. We’re still getting a lot of reps with each of them, and they are rotating evenly with turns. Because of the number of reps they are getting, we’ll just leave it.”

On the continued absence of Sammie Stroughter - “For every player that’s not at practice or hurt, we have to prepare for the alternative. But we don’t know about this one. I don’t know any more than the last time we talked.”
