AFTER AN UNOFFICIAL visit this summer, the Beavers held the early edge in the recruiting battle for Dominic Galas, a 6-2, 275-pound center out of Modesto, Calif., who just.. makes.. plays. These days, however, it is a school other than the Beavs who have most captured his interest. Oregon State and four others have offers on the table for the Central Catholic High hoss.

Colorado has been showing Galas the most recruiting love of late, and it is the Buffs who have climbed to the top of his leaderboard.

"I think right now, I'm probably leaning towards Colorado," said Galas. "They're really been active recruiting me. You can't hear enough good things about coach (Dan) Hawkins. I haven't been up to Colorado yet obviously but I'm really looking forward to it...and I really like what I've seen and heard so far."

Galas, who said he liked the idea of a small town setting for his collegiate experience, is in the process of finalizing details on his visit to Boulder, with an eye towards a couple weeks from Saturday.

"They have two away games next and then they play Kansas (Oct. 20) and that's when I want to go," he said.

AS FOR AN official visit to Corvallis and Oregon State, those plans look to be further down the road.

"They want me to come up but they really didn't offer an official which I thought was funny, but I guess they say they like their officials later in the season, like in December, when it starts to slow down for them -- and I understand that completely.

"They play at Cal on the 13th and I was going to go there just to meet the coaches but (as for going) up to Oregon State...when they play Washington (Nov. 10), that's when I was going to go up on an unofficial. Stanford (Oct. 27), or Washington, that's what we've been talking about for an unofficial," said Galas.

A TRIP OUT to Boise State, who Galas noted has also ramped up their recruitment, is being planned for either this weekend or next, for one of BSU's two scheduled Sunday games -- Oct. 7 or Oct. 14. Galas noted the "down to earth" BSU coaching staff as one of the main draws of the school.

Galas has already visited Nevada, and said he enjoyed the experience.

GALAS SAID he has no set timetable for a decision on a verbal commitment -- could be sooner, could be later. He holds offers from Oregon State, Colorado, Boise State, UNLV and Nevada.

"I'm just trying to keep my options open...I like the Pac-10 and that's Oregon State. Right now, it would really be between three schools -- Colorado, Boise and Oregon State, with Colorado probably at the top," said Galas.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC's record stands at 2-1-1 heading into Friday night's tilt against Amador. Galas said individually, he's been pleased with his performance thus far but is still searching for that elusive slobberknocker block.

"We don't really record pancake blocks but if we did, I think the numbers would be off the chart. If I don't get a pancake, if I don't drive a guy back about 10 yards, I come back to the huddle ticked off...all my games have been real solid this year, a lot of pancakes, going downfield. I'm still looking for an against the grain block, I haven't got one of those yet," said Galas.

Galas, named offensive line MVP at a NIKE camp this summer, is also an accomplished wrestler. In the classroom, he is an excellent student and achieved a qualifying score on the SAT earlier this year.
