In last season’s Champ Sports Bowl, Sam Hollenbach passed for 223 yards and two
TDs, and Lance Ball rushed for 98 yards to lead the Terrapins to a 24-7 win over
Purdue.
The Terrapins
kept the Boilermakers’ offense, the NCAA’s 10th best at 425 yards per game, in
check, allowing just 285 total yards. Keon Lattimore added 86 rushing yards on
20 carries for the Terps, who held the ball for 39:48. Maryland posted 429 total
yards and 20 first downs.

Freshman wide receiver James Rodgers ran 25 yards around end for the go-ahead
touchdown, and the Oregon State defense stuffed No. 18 Oregon on fourth down
to preserve a 38-31 victory in double overtime on Saturday.
The two teams matched
field goals in the first extra session before Rodgers broke free on the first
play of the second overtime. Oregon (8-4, 5-4 Pac-10) was faced with fourth-and-1

In what some called the greatest Sun Bowl ever played, Oregon State rallied
from a 14-point deficit to post an improbable 39-38 victory over Missouri in
the 73rd annual event in El Paso.
The Beavers essentially
won the game when tight end Joe Newton caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from
Matt Moore -- followed by the gutsy two-point conversion call by Riley and his
players -- concluding with an Yvenson Bernard run.
The Beavers rallied
for 18 fourth-quarter points and denied Missouri QB Chase Daniel the possible
bowl MVP honor
-- Daniel had 330 yards passing and two touchdowns. Sun Bowl MVP Matt Moore,
now a Carolina Panther, passed for 356 yards and four touchdowns (rushed for

This is the first meeting between Oregon State and Maryland.
Oregon State has
a 1-0 record against current ACC members. The only current ACC team that the
Beaver program has played is Duke. Oregon State played at Durham Jan. 1,
1942 in the only Rose Bowl not played in Pasadena -- due to concerns of an
attack on the West Coast during World War II.
The Terps are facing
just their second Pac-10 opponent in a bowl game. Maryland fell to Washington,
21-20, in the 1982 Aloha Bowl. In fact, Maryland has only played a Pac-10 team
three times in school history (also UCLA in 1954-55).

TERPS: Maryland has a 9-10-2 all-time bowl record. Maryland is bowl
eligible for the fifth time in seven years under coach Ralph Friedgen. The Terps
have won each of their last three bowl games, a school record, and the second
longest streak in the ACC.
Friedgen’s three
bowl wins are the most of any Maryland coach. He is 3-1 in bowl games. Prior to
Friedgen’s arrival, Maryland made only one postseason appearance in the previous
15 years.
BEAVS:
Oregon State holds a 8-4 record in postseason play. (For Oregon State's complete

here.) OSU has won three straight bowl games, the longest active
streak in the Pac-10. Beaver head coach Mike Riley has never lost a bowl
game that he has been involved in (6-0). The record includes victories in the
2006 Sun Bowl over Missouri (39-38), 2004 Insight Bowl over Notre Dame (38-21)
and 2003 Las Vegas Bowl over New Mexico (55-14).
Riley was also
victorious as the offensive coordinator at USC in the Rose (vs. Northwestern),
Freedom (vs. Utah) and Cotton (vs. Texas Tech). His offenses have generated an
average 42.7 points and 441 yards per game in the six bowls.

MARYLAND:
The Terps are one of only four teams in the country (also Kentucky, LSU and
Illinois) to defeat two top-10 teams this season.
Maryland has faced three top-10 teams this season and has gone 2-1 in those
contests. This is the first time in school history the Terps have defeated two
top-10 teams in the same season. It’s also just the second year in school history
the Terps have faced three top-10 teams in the same season (also 1982). They
lost to No. 4 West Virginia, 31-14, on
Sept. 13, downed No. 10 Rutgers, 34-24, on Sept. 29, and defeated No. 8 Boston College (Nov. 10).
OREGON STATE: The 2007 season will be remembered for several milestones,
including defeating two nationally ranked opponents (at the time) on the road,
the first ever
for Oregon State in the same season. The Beavers defeated then No. 2 California
31-28 on
Oct. 13 and then No. 18 Oregon 38-31 in double overtime Dec. 1.
Tough
schedules.
UM: Prior to the start of the season, SI.com had the Terps’ schedule ranked
24th-most difficult in the country. According to
the NCAA, the Terps’ 2007 schedule is tied for 27th-most difficult in the
nation, based on records of past opposition
(65-51/.560). Maryland’s schedule is ranked 27th-most difficult according
to final regular-season Sagarin Ratings.
OSU:
Oregon State’s schedule heading into the Emerald Bowl ranks as the 21st most
difficult in the nation based on the combined records of its opponents -- 59-21
-- the fourth most difficult in the Pac-10 trailing Washington (82-55), Arizona
(69-50) and Oregon (74-54).
Turnovers.
TERRAPINS: The Terps are
currently fourth in the ACC and tied for 24th in the NCAA in turnover margin
(+0.58). Maryland has forced
22 turnovers on the season and lost the ball just 15 times. They forced three
turnovers vs. UNC (Nov. 3), but did not convert them into points. On the season, Maryland has out-scored the
opposition 68-43 off turnovers.
BEAVERS:
Heading into its Oct. 6 game vs. Arizona, OSU had committed the most turnovers
in the nation with 21 and was a negative-10 for turnover margin -- 116th in the
nation (119 teams overall). Since then the Beavers are plus-14 (7 games), are
tied for seventh in the nation and first in the Pac-10 for forced turnovers with
32.
Over the last 48
games, Oregon State is 21-2 when committing fewer turnovers than its opponent,
5-14 when committing more turnovers and 3-3 when even.
Baby, it's
cold outside.
Oregon State has been successful of late on the road in Pac-10 action posting a
11-6 record since the start of 2004. Only USC (13-3) has more away game
victories in that same span -- one of its losses was at OSU last season,
snapping the Trojans’ 27-game conference win streak.
Oregon State has put together another 2006-like stretch drive. The Beavers are a
Pac-10 best 14-3 combined in the months of October, November and December over
the last two seasons.

The Beavers enter the Emerald Bowl second in the nation for rush defense,
allowing 75 yards per game and are 12th overall for defense giving up an average
of 313 yards. Here is a closer look at the opponents’ rushing statistics vs. OSU
as compared to the season average:

On the same note,
the Maryland defense has tightened up its run defense as of late giving up less
than 70 yards a game in their last three contests.
Riley making
history.
Head coach Mike Riley and former head coaches the late Tommy Prothro (1955-64)
and the late Dee Andros (1965-75) are the only mentors in Oregon State history
to post victories over top 25 teams in three consecutive years (nobody has done
it four straight).
Riley has wins in
2005 over No. 18 Cal, 2006 over No. 3 USC and No. 24 Hawai’i, and 2007 over No.
2 Cal and No. 18 Oregon. Prothro won games in 1962 over No. 12 Stanford and No.
19 West Virginia, in 1963 over No. 14 Baylor and in 1964 over No. 17 Oregon.
Andros beat No. 18 Arizona State in 1969, No. 14 Oklahoma in 1970 and No. 11
Arizona State in 1971.
Riley has won
five of his last nine games vs. top 25 foes.
For the first
time since 1966-69, Oregon State finished the season with back-to-back winning
marks in Pac-10 play. The Beavers placed third in 2006 and 2007 at 6-3. Head
coach Mike Riley has guided the program to three winning marks in conference
action.
Only USC has a
better overall and conference record than Oregon State over the last two
seasons. Here is a closer look: USC 21-4 (14-4 in Pac-10), Oregon State 18-8
(12-6), Arizona State 17-8 (11-7), California 16-9 (10-8), Oregon 15-10 (9-9),
UCLA 13-12 (10-8), Arizona 11-13 (8-10), Washington State 11-13 (7-11),
Washington 9-16 (5-13) and Stanford 5-19 (4-14).
Perfection.
Sophomore quarterback Lyle Moevao, who nearly won the starting job in preseason,
is 3-0 as a starter and led Oregon State to the mythical Pacific Northwest title
with wins over Washington, Washington State and Oregon.
Moevao, replacing
the injured Sean Canfield (shoulder), has completed 45 of 87 (.517) of his pass
attempts for 556 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also has two
rushing touchdowns in the last two games.

and notes:
- Ralph Friedgen-coached teams rarely beat themselves and that trend has continued
this season. Maryland is the
second-least penalized team in the ACC (5.5 pg). That mark also ranks tied
for 25th in the nation. In terms of yards
(44.33 pg), Maryland is also second in the ACC and 16th in the nation.
- The Terps are
one of only two teams in the nation to have two players with 12 or more rushing
touchdowns, and one of
only five to have two players with more than 10. Keon Lattimore’s 13 touchdowns
ranks first in the ACC, while Lance Ball checks in second with 12.
- The Terps’ three-game stretch from Sept.13 through Sept. 29 may have been
one of the hardest in the country. In
consecutive weeks, the Terps played host to West Virginia in College Park
(ranked No. 4 in both polls), traveled to
defending ACC champion Wake Forest, and headed to New Jersey to face Rutgers
(ranked No. 10 in both polls). They
went 1-2 in that stretch.
- The Beavers
have had tremendous success on fourth downs this season, converting 64
percent (9-14) -- the 17th best percentage in the nation and second in the
Pac-10. The Beaver defense has been solid on fourth down as well, allowing
the second-lowest percentage in the conference and seventh-lowest in the
nation at 30 percent (6-20).
- The Beavers
are first in the Pac-10 and second in the nation (Troy is first) on third
down defense allowing 28.3 (54-191) percent. The Beaver offense has improved
on converting third downs of late at 43.2 (16-37) over the last two games --
35 percent for the season (68-192).
- Oregon State
has outscored its opponents 127-16 in the first quarter this season and over
the last 21 games has a margin of 207-40 in the opening period. No team in
the Football Bowl Subdivision has allowed fewer first quarter points. Oregon
is the only team to score a touchdown against OSU, while field goals were
made by Arizona, Cincinnati and USC.
- The Beavers
have two players who rank in the top-10 in the Pac-10 Conference for
quarterback sacks -- defensive ends Victor Butler (3rd/9.5) and Slade Norris
(6th/9.0). Butler is second in the Pac-10 for accumulated yardage lost with
96 -- tied for fourth nationally. Maryland has allowed 3.2 sacks per game,
107th in the nation (119 teams).
- Oregon State
averages 8.6 tackles for loss per game, tied for sixth in the nation. The
Beavers accumulated yardage via TFLs is a national leading 507 -- Stanford
is second with 468. OSU’s defense accounted for the nation’s top mark in
2006 with 528 yards lost.
- Starting
right guard Roy Schuening is expected to make his 50th consecutive start at
the Emerald Bowl -- the longest streak and the most games in OSU history.
Receiver Anthony Brown is also quietly moving up the list with 41 overall
starts, 10th all-time at OSU.
- USC claims
the “Tailback U” title in college football and rightfully so with four
individuals in the top-10 for career rushing in the Pac-10 Conference. But,
to the surprise of many, Oregon State is the only other program with more
than one individual in the top-11 -- Ken Simonton (2nd/5,044 yards), Yvenson
Bernard (10th/3,685 yards) and St. Louis Rams’ Steven Jackson (11th/3,625
yards).

The Beavers
lead the Pac-10 and are seventh in the nation allowing just 18 yards per
kickoff return. That could be an interesting statistic to watch in the
Emerald Bowl as Maryland is the nation’s leader allowing 16.1 yards.

the last 10 of 12 games when Yvenson Bernard gains 100 or more yards
rushing.
