Beavs fall to ASU, league win proves elusive

OREGON STATE put together one of their better efforts of the season against ASU at home on Saturday, as Lathen Wallace lit up from downtown for a career-high 22 points and the Beavs were knocking on the door inside of five minutes to go in the game. But cold shooting and some defensive breakdowns late resulted in another loss as OSU became the first Pac-10 team to go winless in the league.

Behind freshman Lathen Wallace's long distance shooting, Oregon State made a run, coming back from an eight point halftime deficit to pull within two in the second half, and later within three, but could not get over the hump in crunch time.

Wallace connected for six three-pointers on the afternoon in leading all scorers.

Senior Marcel Jones added 14 points in his final home game at Oregon State while frosh Calvin Haynes chipped in nine.

OSU started off slow, allowing ASU to score the games first seven points. Haynes' trey gave OSU it's first lead of the game at 16-15. The Beavs trailed 38-30 at the break after a cold snap in shooting over the latter part of the first half.

After the Beavs closed to 63-60 on a Haynes three-ball, ASU outscored Oregon State 14-4 over the final stretch.

The Beavs connected on a season high 13 shots from beyond the arc. Still, Oregon State's season long shooting woes continued on Saturday -- the Beavs shot 34 percent from the field, 33 percent from downtown.

Oregon State (6-24, 0-18), posted the first 0-18 record in the Pac-10 since the conference expanded for the 1978-79 season. Arizona, Oregon and Washington State had previously posted single conference-win seasons.

Next up for the Beavers is a first round game in the Pac-10 tourney against Arizona, who lost to Oregon on Saturday evening. The Beavs lost to the Wildcats this past Thursday, 81-45. The previous year's meeting was a 76-63 UA win in Tucson in January.
