The Beaver football team hit the Reser Stadium turf for the first of fifteen
practices. Expected junior college transfers RB Jeremy Francis, DT Stephen Paea
and OT Viliamu Nau were all at practice although Nau just watched as his paperwork
has not arrived yet. He is expected to practice Wednesday.
WR Sammie Stroughter and S Cameron Collins missed drills with the flu.
QB Sean Canfield was cleared to practice by the doctors, but Mike Riley does
not want him to throw until the summer. DT Pernell Booth, who will miss spring
practice recovering from ankle surgery, roamed the sidelines with a cane.
A handful of former Beaver football players including Yvenson Bernard, Kyle DeVan, Joey LaRocque and Alan Darlin were on hand teaching and working out with
the team.
Overall - “The guys worked hard today and
had good enthusiasm. We’ll take it from here as this is just the start
of building a foundation. Our goal is to put in the foundation of what we do.
We want to cover a lot of situations in games – like our third down and
red zone offenses. Overall, we want to work on the identity of this team in
all areas.”
On Canfield sitting out the spring - “I’ve
been very impressed with Sean during the offseason. He’s worked incredibly
hard in the weight room and he has been engaged with this team. I think it’s
important for him to be standing next to Danny Langsdorf and watching practice
and be ready to go full speed this fall."
