Quizz very doubtful says Riley, QB call soon

MIKE RILEY on Tuesday morning was decidedly less optimistic than he had been earlier in the week on the availability of running back Jacquizz Rodgers for Saturday, saying the Oregon State freshman sensation was "very doubtful" for the Civil War with the shoulder injury. As for who starts under center, the call on that will be made sooner rather than later said the head man of the Beavs.
is very doubtful. He is feeling better but we don't want to put him at risk and there might be something with his shoulder -- it might not be right for him to play. So I'm very doubtful about Quizz being able to play in the game," said Riley on Tuesday morning.
Riley went on to say the Beavs had not made the final call on Quizz at this point and would wait until later in the week to make what he called "a final-final decision." Rodgers suffered a Grade 2 strain in the AC joint in his shoulder against Arizona in the first quarter and did not return.
If Quizz cannot go,
will be called upon to step up as the duo did, with aplomb, this past Saturday.
In the hard fought win over Arizona, both Beavers were big impact players -- McCants slogged out 52 tough ground yards on 15 carries while Francis was the Beavs' leading pass catcher, with seven grabs, that went for 61 yards.
Meanwhile, Riley said the Beavs will likely decide on whether the OSU starting quarterback for the Civil War would be
sooner rather than later.
"I anticipate (Moevao) practicing today and we'll make a decision about the quarterback probably by tomorrow," said Riley.
Riley said the decision would be dependant on other factors than if Moevao (shoulder) was healthy enough to play.
"I feel like that more than ever right now that it is not a foregone conclusion (if Moevao is healthy that he'll start), and there are things that will enter into it. Sean has done a very good job and has led us to wins here. So we'll discuss it and... finalize the quarterback deal in the next day," said Riley.
"I love it that there's a lot on this game. I'm really proud of the two schools in this state -- for the football being played, the state of the programs and the competition," said Riley.
"What I've always talked to our team about is the focus and detail of practice: 'We win the game on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday..and then we play on Saturday,'" said Riley.
"I'm not worried about our guys playing tight. I think you play tight if you're not prepared," said Riley.
"I think we have a good defense and they'll stretch us in every way with that offense...it will come down to the tangibles...assignment and then blocking and tackling and making some plays. That's what we're going to focus on. And our guys have been great at that," said Riley.
More on Quizz:
There can be situations where a player can be medically cleared but the pain is simply too great. In the event that Quizz is cleared, which is no sure bet, and he deemed himself ready to play and wanted to try and tough it out, Riley said the most weight will be given to what the doctors say.
"We'll be very conservative with that...I think we may get that from Quizz and there will be a lot more to this decision than that," said Riley. "I'm not trying to play any kind of role here, but we are not going to put him at risk in this game.
"It's just like every (injured) player -- you listen to what they have to say but you go by what the experts say. The heaviest (consideration) will be the risk factor."
Riley said the medical staff is optimistic, however, on Quizz' availability for the bowl game.
