THE PRIMARY CONCERN coming into the Stanford game on the road was the start -- how would the Beavers respond out of the gate after knocking off Cal earlier in the week. Strong, as it turned out, as OSU blasted out to a 16-2 edge. The Cardinal made charge after charge in the second half but Oregon State had the answer each time, and won at Stanford for the first time since 1993.
Oregon State (8-10, 3-5 Pac-10) was on target all night long and even more so as the game would along. The Beavs shot 62 percent from the floor -- 68 percent in the second half.
Calvin Haynes
was the long distance workhorse in the 72-60 Beaver triumph, scoring a career high 25 points.
He had help.
Seth Tarver
and
Roeland Schaftenaar
each just missed cracking the 20 point mark, with Tarver a season-high 19 points while Schaftenaar had 18.
The Beavs led at halftime by six points and the for the first 10 minutes, it was punch and counterpunch. OSU would go up by as many as nine, Stanford would cut it to as few as five points.
Back and forth it went, until OSU finally pushed the lead to double-digits with 7:28 to go on Schaftenaar's jumper. After that, the Stanford players' body language seemed to indicate they know this one was over.
Schaftenaar, a 6-11 center who does not get many of his points in the paint, was 8-for-11 from the field on a variety of twisting runners, jumpers and hook shots. Tarver and Schaftenaar each had three steals, as the Beavs forced 16 Cardinal turnovers.
Haynes played 36 minutes in his first start of the season, hitting 10-of-15 including a pair from 3-point land.
Tarver was the sharpest of all, hitting 8-of-10 along with six rebounds.
Daniel Deane
led the Beavs on the boards, pulling down eight rebounds. He also chipped in seven points.
NOTABLE NOTES:
Oregon State with the victory matched their conference win total of the last two years combined. The Beavs have beaten USC, Cal and Stanford this season.
Next up, the Beavs hit the halfway point of the Pac-10 slate with a tilt against their rivals, the Ducks. Oregon has struggled in the first half of the year, 6-14 overall and the Ducks are winless (0-8) in the Pac-10.
Oregon State won their second consecutive conference road game for the first time in six years.
The Beavs never trailed against Stanford. Oregon State played without sophomore guard
Lathen Wallace
(tail bone contusion) while Stanford was without the services of Mitch Johnson (calf).
