BREAKING: Beavers land Texan yardage machine
Alvin High running back Ashton Jefferson is a Beaver. "Coach (Danny) Langsdorf called me today and he said that he's got an offer for now instead of a grayshirt," said Jefferson. It didn't take long for Jefferson, who had been verbally committed to Utah State, to go black and orange despite the fact he has never been to Oregon State's campus. "I jumped on the opportunity," said Jefferson. JEFFERSON DIDN'T START until his senior year so a number of schools weren't on him recruiting-wise after his junior campaign (or before) like they were other Texas running backs. But he made up for lost time, and then some, bowling people over and outrunning the rest in '08. Indeed, Jefferson racked up the second most rushing yards in school history this past seaso -- , 1,565 yards in but nine games -- on 261 carries with 14 touchdowns. A healthy chunk of it, says Alvin coach Jeff Dungen, he did on his own. "He was what we had. My best offensive lineman was 5-10, 190 pounds...Ashton is getting hit four times in the backfield and he's still grinding out five yards. If you give him any type of crease, he's going the distance...he never even came close to getting caught when he broke one. He outran people that had the edge on him too," Dungen says. Jefferson also never fumbled once this season. OREGON STATE RECEIVED Jefferson's tape late in the recruiting season and expressed immediate interest, as did Kansas, Iowa State, Utah State and Utah. Mike Riley and Langsdorf went down to Texas about two weeks ago to meet with Dungen and Jefferson and things went quickly from there. Jefferson was named unanimous MVP of his district (24-5A) despite playing on a 2-7 team. Dungen also said Jefferson runs a "sub 4.5 40" and has "great grades".
