OREGON STATE BROKE out the defensive clamps Thursday night against Stanford, building a 21-point lead and then grinding their way to a 66-54 wire-to-wire victory over the Cardinal. In the process, the Beavers completed their first season sweep of Stanford in 16 years and logged the most conference wins by an Oregon State squad since 2004-05.
The Beavs put it in overdrive in the first half, racing out to a 25-6 advantage and holding Stanford without a point for a 6:41 stretch.
Oregon State shot 52.4 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes -- and then actually improved on that (55.6) in the second half. The Beavs took a 29-17 lead into halftime, holding Stanford to 31.6 percent shooting in the opening half.
Oregon State's biggest lead was 21 points and
Roeland Schaftenaar
was a big reason why -- the 6-foot-11 point forward poured in a career high 26 points including a pair of three pointers on 8-for-11 shooting. He also pulled down five boards and had two blocks for Oregon State (12-13, 6-8 Pac-10).
The six conference wins are the most for the Beavs since the 2004-05 black and orange vintage logged eight. Oregon State has four regular season games remaining, with three of those on the road.
Calvin Haynes
came off the bench to add 17 points and five rebounds for Oregon State.
Rickey Claitt
and
Seth Tarver
each added seven points and combined for 10 rebounds on Thursday against the Cardinal.
A flurry of three pointers helped bring Stanford to within five at 59-54 with 1:59 to play but it was the Cardinal's last gasp, Oregon State finished off the game on a 7-0 run.
Oregon State, who has been inconsistent at the line this season, had a relatively good night shooting free throws -- the Beavers were 20- of-27 on the evening.
The Beavers next play Saturday at 2 p.m. against visiting California -- the last home contest of the regular season. The game will be televised on either Fox Sports Northwest or CSN depending on your carrier.
