OREGON STATE dominated the first half in Round 2 of the Civil War on the hardcourt -- crisp passes, torrid shooting, tight defense, the Beavers looked to be in control. But the final 20 minutes was a much, much different story. The Beavs surrendered a monstrous 51 points over the final 20 minutes, dropping a 79-69 decision in Eugene.
Oregon State took a 10 point lead into halftime and led by as many as 14 in the opening moments of the second half.
It all went south from there. Big time.
The Ducks put together a stunning 19-0 run, fueled in part by six Oregon State turnovers, and quickly flipped the game.
Oregon built an eight point lead before
Calvin Haynes
stopped the onslaught with a trey with 10:05 left on the clock.
Another Haynes' three-ball cut it to four but OSU couldn't solve Oregon's press defense in the second half and never regained the offensive rhythm they showed early.
It was a stark contrast to the first 20 minutes when Oregon State's precision passing and hot shooting built a 38-28 OSU lead.
Oregon State already had 11 assists at 5:36 mark of the first half and 18 points in the paint. They held Oregon scoreless for the last 4:09 of the half and shot 63 percent from the floor.
But momentum turned in a hurry in the second half.
The Beavs still had their chances over the final 10 minutes of the game and had some nice open looks. Oregon cooled off after taking a 56-48 lead but more OSU turnovers and poor free throw shooting swept away any chance for a Beaver comeback. The Beavs shot 62.5 percent (10-16) from the line.
Three Beavs ended the night in double figures -- Calvin Haynes scored 16,
Seth Tarver
was 6-for-9 from the field and had 14 points while
Roeland Schaftenaar
chipped in 13.
Lathen Wallace
added nine points on the night. Tarver scored in double figures for the fourth time in six games.
Oregon State fell to 13-14 on the year and 7-9 in Pac-10 play. Oregon improved to 8-20, 2-14.
The Beavs finish out the regular season with an L.A. road trip against UCLA on Thursday and Southern Cal on Saturday. The Pac-10 tournament starts on March 11.
