CORVALLIS--On an afternoon expected to be the conclusion of the Sean Canfield to Darrell Catchings…
FINAL SPRING SCRIMMAGE: Defensive supremacy
Five Beavers -- Dwight Roberson, Anthony Watkins, Lance Mitchell, Taylor Henry and James Dockery -- had interceptions on the afternoon. Roberson and Mitchell each also forced fumbles.
What stood out most perhaps was the continual pressure the Beavers applied against a beleaguered offensive line -- and from around the end and up the gut.
There were a number of sacks on the day, and a few more that would have been had the quarterbacks been fair game.
The injury bug, which has been prevalent this spring, struck again on the final day of the spring practice session. LT Timi Oshinowo, whom some observers gave a slight nod in the spring position battle with Colin Kelly, got his cleats stuck when the pile moved into him and he had to be carted off.
There was no immediate news on the severity of the knee injury but it didn't look good with Oshinowo unable to put any weight on his leg and in obvious pain. Keynan Parker had a big bag of ice on an ankle towards the end of the scrimmage, though it didn't look at first glance to be a long term injury.
Some of the earlier injuries from the spring -- RB Ryan McCants (knee), LB Tony Wilson (knee) and WR Kaulin Krebs (knee) -- will result in off-season surgery, said Mike Riley. Cornerback Brandon Hardin will also have surgery on a broken bone in his wrist that he suffered last season.
OSU RUNNING BACKS were held to 49 yards rushing on 18 carries on the day.
Sean Canfield turned in a good completion percentage, hitting on 20-of-32 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown. But he was also victimized by three interceptions. It was a decidedly uneven day for Canfield who has had a whale of a spring.
The scrimmage saw the No. 1 offense and defense alternating against the ones and twos, with some twos joining the ones at times. Offensively, RB Jovan Stevenson, WRs Darrell Catchings and Jordan Bishop and TE Joe Halahuni all had their moments on a day that belonged to the defense.
DE Ben Terry, LBs Dwight Roberson and Keaton Kristick, CB James Dockery and S Lance Mitchell were among the standouts on defense.
Backup QB Ryan Katz completed 10 of 21 passes for 101 yards, while No. 3 quarterback Justin Engstrom went 8-of-15 for 48 yards with one interception. Peter Lalich also got some turns running against a combination of threes and twos and directed the offense well at times.
The hit of the day was turned in by Kristick. The Beaver 'backer blasted Damola Adeniji on a completion across the middle. Bishop was the leading receiver on the day, with five catches for 95 yards.
