FUTURE BEAVERS Jordan Poyer and Kevin Cummings are in Canton, Ohio for this weekend’s inaugural International Federation of American Football Junior World Championships. Cummings, Poyer and Team USA will take the field in the tournament’s opening round game today vs. France at 5 p.m. The eight-team tournament also features Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Germany, Mexico and Sweden.
Jordan Poyer
(6-0, 172) is one of the best pure prep athletes the state of Oregon has ever produced, starring in football, baseball and basketball. As a gridder, he became the first player in over 15 years to be named 4A All-State Player of the Year on both sides of the ball in the upper divisions. Some of his senior football numbers include 23 passing touchdowns vs. 8 INT in 200 attempts, 39 rushing touchdowns, 2,200 yards passing, 1,800 yards rushing.
Kevin Cummings
(6-2, 165) is a player who did a lot of things well in high school -- he has very good speed and calls on an extra gear when in traffic. The
Mike Riley
connection on Cummings: his father played in the CFL when Riley coached in the league. "He's a nice-sized kid with good movement, a good route-runner and pass-catcher. He'll be a good player for us in time," said Riley on Signing Day.
The winner of Saturday's USA-France game will play the winning team from the Mexico vs. Sweden contest on July 1 at 4 p.m. PDT.
The bronze medal game will be held July 4 at 4 p.m. PDT and the gold medal game will be July 5 at 10 a.m. PDT. The gold and bronze medal games will be televised live by Fox College Sports Atlantic and will be available on DirecTV channel 617.
The gold and bronze medal games will also be streamed live on FoxCollegeSports.com.
Poyer, the state of Oregon’s offensive and defensive 4A player of the year last season, played quarterback and safety during his prep career at Astoria High where he accounted for 123 touchdowns in three seasons. He also was a multi-year all-state selection in baseball. He'll arrive at Oregon State this summer as a safety.
Cummings, rated by Scout.com as one of the nation's Top 125 receivers, is from Culver City, Calif. and played receiver and defensive back during his prep career at Crespi High. A first-team All-Serra league at receiver as a senior, Cummings also was a sprinter on the track team. He'll come to Oregon State as a receiver.
Cummings and Poyer will also be in Corvallis in July participating in OSU’s nationally recognized BEST Bridge Program for incoming student-athletes. Cummings is then expected to grayshirt and join the Beavs in January of 2010 according to Oregon State Sports Information while Poyer will start his Beaver career this season and take part in fall camp in August.
