Want tough? Check out OSU's linebacker verbal

MICHAEL BIBBEE IS A BEAV

HOW'S THIS FOR a great linebacker story -- he played five games last season with a hernia...and didn't even know it. OSU might not sign a large recruiting class numbers-wise in '10 but one area of need in the class -- linebackers. And Mike Riley just landed a homegrown 'backer who turned in a stellar performance at their full contact camp -- 6-foot-3, 225 pound Michael Bibbee out of Eugene.

Michael Bibbee out of North Eugene High didn't take long to go black and orange once the Oregon State coaches offered.

"I've been looking at it for a while and I want to go into the Engineering field and they have a good Engineering school so that was one big factor. And then I really like the coaches there, it's a great atmosphere," said Bibbee.

BIBBEE TORE UP the Midwestern League as a sophomore in 2007 but got bit by the injury bug last year. He missed the final five games of his junior season after surgery to correct a hernia.

Bibbee said he didn't realize it, but he was playing with the hernia the first half of his junior campaign.

"I played the first five games with it. They said I was lucky because any little hit there could have messed it up even more. I didn't even know that I had it...I went in on a Thursday found out and then had surgery on a Monday. I wanted to play (Friday) but they said it probably wouldn't be a good idea to risk anything," said Bibbee.

BIBBEE SAID HE'LL likely line up in the middle for linebackers coach Greg Newhouse.

"He told me he could see me playing both but he I think he's looking at me for middle mostly...Coach Riley had said he thinks I will fit in well with their type of defense really well, that I would be a real asset and fit in well with their scheme," said Bibbee.

BIBBEE HAD BEEN in contact with Cal and Washington but the Oregon State full contact camp was the clincher for him.

"I've been talking to Oregon State since last year when they started recruiting me...This year I went to the contact camp for the first time. (Newhouse) just wanted me to show that I could be physical, play hard and go hard the whole time," said Bibbee.

Consider that task accomplished.

NOTABLE NOTE:
After his hernia surgery, Bibbee was able to get right back at it and was a starter for his basketball team at North Eugene. He's also a standout baseball player.
