BIGGER THAN 2000 CIVIL WAR? (Richard Siegler)

THE WINNER OF THE CIVIL WAR between Oregon State and Oregon will move on to play in the Granddaddy of Them All, the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. The titanic matchup for the 113th meeting between the two schools was set tonight after Oregon State earlier dispatched WSU and Oregon used a fourth quarter comeback to set up a win over Arizona in double overtime.
This one might rival the 2000 game.
Back then, Oregon was No. 5 and with a win would earn the Pac-10's berth in the Rose Bowl. Oregon State was ranked No. 8 in the land, and needed a win over the Ducks to keep their Pasadena hopes alive. The Beavs won 23-13 but lost out on the Rose Bowl, they were instead selected by the BCS to go to the Fiesta Bowl, where they blasted Notre Dame 41-9.
Coming into this Saturday, Oregon State was ranked No. 20 in both the USA Today Coaches' and Associated Press polls, and No. 19 in the BCS, with the latest rankings to be released tomorrow. Oregon meanwhile was ranked No. 11 in the AP, Coaches' and BCS.
Two teams ranked closely above Oregon State lost today (Wisconsin, Stanford) as did LSU (Nos. 8, 10 in the AP, Coaches' polls).
The all time series between the Beavs and Ducks stands at 56-46-10 in favor of Oregon. The Ducks hold a 25-23-3 lead in Eugene.
First played in 1894, the Civil War this year will be played in Eugene on Thursday, Dec. 3 on ESPN. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. PST.
