Beavs knock off USC on road, sweep Trojans

WHEN OREGON STATE has been on this hoops season, it's their defense that has led the way. So it was on the hardcourt in the 49-44 win at USC, as the Beavers scored 19 points off of 11 steals.

OSU (13-15, 7-9 Pac-10 play) held the Trojans to just 29.4 percent shooting on the night, using a 1-3-1 zone much of the game.

Seth Tarver had 14 points to lead Oregon State as the Beavers swept the season series from USC (16-12, 8-8).

The Beavs trailed early, down by as many as 11 in the first half before putting on a 14-4 run to end the first 20 minutes of play. The good times for the black and orange continued coming out of the locker room, with OSU making an 11-4 run to open the second half.

USC cut the margin to 46-44 with 34 seconds remaining but Roeland Schaftenaar, who had a rough night from the floor at 1-for-7, was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line in the game's final minute to seal the Beaver win.

Joe Burton led the Beavers with seven boards while Jared Cunningham had three steals.

Calvin Haynes went 4-for-6 in 25 minutes, scoring eight points and pulling down five rebounds. Oregon State shot 40 percent from the field, and just 1-for-11 from beyond the 3-point line.

The Beavs play host to Washington and Washington State to close out the regular season before heading back to L.A. for the Pac-10 tournament, which begins March 10.
