| Despite
a small population the state of Hawaii produces a surprising amount of
Division I football players. Each year the Outland Trophy Watch List,
an award given annually to the nation's best interior lineman, is sprinkled
with Hawaiians.
According
to USA Today, per capita, Hawaii ranks in the top 10 with the most players
in the NFL. Around 15% of the Beavers roster is made up of players from
Hawaii.
With strong
ties to family and culture it is important for many recruits from Hawaii
to stay on the West Coast. The chance to play in the Pac-10, but be in
small town and within a relative short distance of the islands is a great
draw for OSU.
The largest
obstacles the Beavers face in Hawaii is increasing competition from other
teams recruiting in Hawaii and of course from the hometown team, the University
of Hawaii.
