A heart-stopping, heartbreaking loss for OSU

SOMEONE WAS GOING to have their hearts broken in this one. That became all too evident during a rollercoaster fourth quarter. Alas for Beaver Nation, that someone turned out to be Oregon State in a wild, 29-23 overtime loss to No. 20 Utah.

BEAVS AND UTES TIED 6-6 AT HALFTIME

IT SEEMED FITTING that the score should be tied 6-6 at the half. In a defensive-fueled two quarters, not only had neither team found the end zone, Utah and Oregon State were unable to convert a single third down until there were mere seconds left on the clock on OSU's last drive. There were two overriding themes in the first 30 minutes. Defense, of course, was one. The other was ...

Greatness for Beavs could begin tonight

CORVALLIS - Almost every year, it seems like the Beavers are on the verge of something special. They’ll win most of their games in the early part of the season, and tease the nation that they are an elite team. But as the year goes on, they almost never make the leap into greatness, the 2000-01 Fiesta Bowl campaign notwithstanding. So this season …

OSU vs. Utah: About those sacks ...

UTAH’s BIG CALLING CARD is their sacks. They’re No. 1 in the nation averaging 5.6 sacks per game, more than a full sack over No. 2 Virginia Tech. But Beaver fans may want to consider a couple of things, including if past will become prologue.

COMMIT: Beavs land Portland's Blake Brandel

THREE-STAR OFFENSIVE TACKLE Blake Brandel out of Portland's Central Catholic texted Scout.com's Brandon Huffman that he's verballed to Oregon State. Brandel, ranked the No. 2 overall prospect in the state of Oregon by Scout.com, has lots of room to pack on the bulk at 6-7, 260-pounds.

OSU's Hollingsworth: 4th-string to starter

OSU ROOKIE LUKE HOLLINGSWORTH was the fourth-string left side defensive end on the official depth chart from the opener all the way through the Colorado game. Now he’s listed as the starter headed into Thursday's game against Utah (Fox Sports 2, Pac-12 Networks, MyNet stations; 7 p.m.). So what the heck happened? Injuries, right? Well, not entirely ...

TV Programming alert for OSU-Utah game

DUE TO A scheduling conflict with Game 5 of baseball's National League Championship Series, Thursday’s Utah at Oregon State football game originally scheduled to air on FOX Sports 1 has been moved. Viewers can find it on either FOX Sports 2, MyNet stations in the state of Oregon and SLC, and most of the Pac-12 Networks will also carry the prime-time contest that kicks off at 7:05 p.m. PDT.

OSU vs. Utah: Beavs face tough D, run-based O

UTAH GETS AFTER the quarterback, and then some. They lead the nation with 5.6 sacks per game. Oregon State’s offensive line has had pass protection trouble this season, ranking No. 96 in sacks allowed out of 125 FBS teams, (12 in five games). So could that mean …

An opportunity massive for the Beavs

THE BEAVS ARE wrapping up their second bye week of the season. Their record stands at an impressive 4-1 and on Thursday night, they host Utah, ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press poll, (Fox Sports 1, 7 p.m.) Make no mistake. It’s a monster opportunity. And ...

Expectations for Peko should be reasonable

OREGON STATE PLAYERS have the day off on Friday in advance of next Thursday night’s game against Utah. And it does seem Kyle Peko is getting ever closer to taking the field for Oregon State. But we all would do well to remember one thing …
