THE COMEBACK
KID: Senior QB Tyler Graunke came off the
bench to start the third quarter and led Hawai‘i from a 10-point halftime
deficit to a 36-17 win over Weber State last week. Graunke helped the Warriors
score on four of their first five second half possessions while completing 13-of-20
for 218 yards with a career high three touchdowns. He was named the WAC's
Offensive Player of the Week and will receive his third career start this
weekend.
OFF TO A
SLOW START: Senior OLB Solomon Elimimian is on the watchlists
for the Nagurski, Bedarick, and Lombardi Awards and was selected as the
preseason WAC Defensive Player of the Year, but has been quiet this season.
He has just nine tackles, including
one for loss, to go along with one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry in
two games.
STYMIED:
After giving up 17 points, 140 yards of offense and 10 first downs in the first half to Weber State last
week the Hawaii defense came out with a vengeance in the second half limiting
the Wildcats to 73 yards, four first downs and zero points. Weber State
finished with minus 20 yards rushing for the entire game.
MOVING
ON UP: PK Dan Kelly, a Lou
Groza candidate, surpassed Justin Ayat for second all-time in
Hawaii football history with 272 career points.
Jason Elam is the career leader with 395
points. Uncharacteristically Kelley missed two field goals against Weber
State last weekend.
PICKING UP THE
SLACK: With standout LBs Adam Leonard and Solomon Elimimian
both off to slow starts a trio of defensive backups have picked up the slack.
Junior LB Brashton Satele was nominated for the WAC
Defensive Player of the Week after grabbing a career-high nine tackles, including
a sack for a loss of 16 yards, in the win over Weber State. Senior S
Erick Robson has chipped in with 11 tackles and one sack while senior DT
Joshua Leonard has 11 tackles, including three for loss.
KEEP YOUR EYE
ON: Senior C John Estes is one of the best offensive players on the
the Hawaii roster and is the only returning all-conference player on offense.
He is on the watch lists for the Rimington, Outland and Lombardi awards.
He has started all 27 games in his two year career.
A HIGH
STANDARD: Hawaii has won 23 of its last 26 games overall and have
recorded winning seasons in seven of
the last nine years. In six of those seasons, UH has recorded at least nine
wins. The Warriors
have posted 10 or more wins in three of the last six seasons, including a school-record
12 last
year.
COACH
SAYS: Hawaii
head coach
Greg McMackinm had this to say about OSU: "We’re
going to play a good, hungry football team. They play USC after us and Utah
after them. I would think they are going to give it their best shot to take
us out and we’re going to give them our best shot. They are really in
need of a win and we’re in need of keeping our string going. I’m
looking forward to it. I hear there’s going to be a lot of Hawaiian people
up there, so I’m really excited about that too."
ON THE
ROAD AGAIN: UH is 0-5 against BCS teams on the road and has never
played in Corvallis.
THE OTHER OFFENSE:
The UH defense and special teams accounted for nine touchdowns — five
interception returns, three kickoff returns, and one punt return last year. UH’s nine non-offensive touchdowns
ranked second
nationally to Wake Forest.
BACK ME:
Inoke Funaki, who started last week and completed 7 of 14 for 87 yards
before being knocked out of the game with a concussion, and Greg Alexander,
who started at Florida, are the co-backup quarterbacks.
CAREER HIGHS:
Besides QB Tyler Graunke three other players set career highs last week:
WR Michael Washington
(109 yards receiving), WR Aaron Bain (2 touchdowns), and
RB Jayson Rego (9
carries for 56 yards).
BEST OF BOTH
WORLDS: RB Leon Wright-Jackson, who was heavily recruited by
OSU, can do a little bit of everything. He has 13 carries for 67 yards and
a TD (5.2 ypc) and five catches for 47 yards (9.4 ypc).
