Peat, offensive line face biggest challege of the year

The statistics don't brush a pretty picture. USC leads the conference with 26 sacks in six games (4.33 sacks per game) while Oregon State has given up 19 sacks (3.16 sacks per game) during the same time frame.

One very important key to last year's victory over the Trojans was the offensive line's ability to tear open holes for Jacquizz Rodgers and to protect Lyle Moevao in the pocket.

In fact the offensive line game up just one sack against USC last year and limited the hits on Moevao. A feat the offensive line will have to try and accomplish again if the Beavers hope to escape Los Angeles with a victory.

"Obviously they are a really good team," offensive guard Gregg Peat said. "Their front seven is great."

The USC defense ranks second in the Conference of Champions in total defense (260.0), fourth in pass defense (192.3) and second in rush defense (67.7). Those numbers add up to an improving offensive line's biggest challenge of the year.

"We've grown as an offensive line," said Peat who has a team high 20 straight starts, "but this is going to be our biggest challenge yet, no doubt about it."

Coach Mike Riley agrees.

"There is a key matchup offensively and that's blocking them," said Riley who is 2-5 against USC.  "They are really good up front, the teams that they have beaten - they overwhelmed up front."
