Stephen Paea Profile
Before the UCLA game the Oregon State defensive had managed just four sacks
in seven games. Junior defensive tackle Stephen Paea almost equaled
that total by himself last weekend as he dragged down the UCLA quarterback three
times - his first sacks of the year.
"He's one of the best, there's no doubt about it," Oregon State coach Mike
Riley said. "He garners a lot of attention inside."
Paea had been at the cusp of grabbing a sack the last two games. He
barely missed USC's Matt Barkley several times in Los Angeles.
For some reason, UCLA decided to give Paea single coverage and the Bruins
paid the price.
"It creates a lot of question marks for you offensively, do you block him
one-on-one with the guard? Do you use a back to help? Do you block down with a
tackle?," Riley said. "That's what people have to decide about Stephen."
On the year Paea is the team's ninth leading tackler with 23 stops, tops
among the defensive linemen. He also has a co-team high two forced
fumbles.
